Eddie Stack Interview

1: What is the most productive time of the day for you to write?

I like to write in the morning for 3 or 4 hours. In the afternoon I edit and re-write.

2: Do you start your projects writing with paper and pen or is it all on the computer?

I tend to make initial notes for story ideas with pen and paper, then transfer to computer. However, I carry a notebook with me and jot down bits and pieces, thoughts, impressions and the like when I’m away from the desk.

3: What do you draw inspiration from?

Life experience, my Irish culture, history and heritage.

4: Do you set goals for yourself when you sit down to write such as word count?

I don’t set specific goals as word counts, but write until I come to a ‘natural break’ in the story, or until I get tired or computer fever.

5: Are you a published or a self published author and how do you come up with your cover art?

I am both self published and published by mainstream houses (Bloomsbury).  I know a number of fine artists and they generally provide cover images for my work.

6: What drives you to choose the career of being a writer?

I’m Irish and come from a culture of storytelling and writing. I didn’t make a conscious decision to be a writer, the path was there and I followed it.

7: Do you own an ebook reading device?

Yes, I have a Kindle.

8: Who are some of your favorite authors and What are you reading now?

I like TC Boyle, Willy Vlautin. Gabriel Marquez, Flannery O’Connor. I’m reading ‘Runaway’ by Alice Munro at the moment.

9: What do you think of book trailers and do you have any plans to have any?

I think book trailers have good potential, though what I’ve seen are a fairly mixed bag, some great, some so-so, more just a waste of time. I’m interested in anything which introduces my work to a wider audience and I’m working on a book trailer for my book The West.

10: What are you working on now that you can talk about?

I’m working on a novel set on an Irish island. It is a mixture of historical fiction and contemporary life.

  1. I have just read The West: Stories from Ireland by Eddie Stack and really enjoyed his storytelling. They're wonderful tales - I recommend you check them out if you haven't already.
